What do you think about the whole situation?
I think the whole situation was being blown out of proportion by the university. I mean the guy didn’t really do anything wrong. He basically offered tutoring online, where it can be accessed to more than one person. Instead of tutoring one person face to face, he found a way to give help to a lot of people at once. According to the second article from the blog question, there wasn’t even any valid proof of answers being given out.
“Loreto continuously stated there was no evidence that answers had been posted on the site.”
Now if there isn’t any proof, how the hell can they charge the guy? I think this situation is just another way for the teachers to stop the use of online forums for the students.
Do you feel the university is in the right or the student?
THE STUDENT!!!!!!! No way is the university right. They were basically about to expel him for trying to help others out. So far as I’ve heard, people who help others should get rewards, not expelled from school! Also, if the university were scared of people sharing answers, why would THEY support a tutoring program? That’s basically the exact same thing except its not online and that’s supported by the university but this facebook group isn’t. Pure stupidity, it’s not rational, incomprehensible…the sheer thought is unfathomable!!!!!
Do you see how facebook could be used as an educational tool or is it simply a social utility?
Well I knew all along that facebook is both a social utility and an educational tool. Last year one student tried to make a group that would help people who are behind to catch up. This group didn’t flourish as well because people joined, but no one was willing to post any of their notes or answers up. Thus I left the group soon after as I saw it as a waste and I think it’s abandoned now. So it can be a great educational tool but I think its mostly used as a social utility. As a high- schooler, I think that homework takes up too much of our lives and we don’t want facebook turning into a place for homework too. Thus we only use it as a social outlet rather than chance to get help regarding education.

Getting a bit angry there Andrew? :P
Anyways, I totally agree with you about the fact that Chris Avenir did absolutely NOTHING wrong. Why should we be punished for helping others in need? Are they trying to teach us that we shouldn't help others and instead, we should ask teachers for every little question we have? Maybe sometimes we don't want to ask the teacher for every little thing, especially when another student or friend can help me. I disagree with you on one part though. Why not have Facebook be an educational tool as well? It does not always have to be about doing homework, it could be about learning new facts that you are interested in too.
Haha, easy on the exclamation point there..
Yes, from a student's point of view, Avenir did nothing wrong. But that's just from our point of view. We don't know why the university teach think that, but that's their opinion. I agree with almost everything you said, except the last part.. Just like what the guy below me said. :)
Most people see it as a social utility. Yes, of course it is. But rather than spending almost all of your time just waiting for a friend's response, it'd be nice to do something educational in between those waiting periods. Plus, I think that if education was put into this social utility, more people might use it.
clayton: lols yea i was getting a bit mad XD. and yes, it can be about learning new facts but come on...does anyone really use facebook to learn something new?
beatrice: too bad...i shall kills the exclamation point. yes but see the teachers are looking at it according to the "code of something" which they have on that cbc site. i red through most of it and nothing in it prohibited the use of facebook or any other blog site for tutoring. It said no plagiarizing but what Avenir did was not plagiarizing. Naw...i think if it became more educational, people would stop using it.
